Innovation Transfer and Training

The BioPhotonics and Nanomedicine Lab, following the statutory activities of the Institute, counts technology transfer among its main objectives. Indeed, several collaborations have been consolidated over recent years with other research institutes of international relevance in open science, and several patents have been developed in the context of industrial partnerships. Examples of industrial and scientific applications include innovative microscopic techniques, minimally invasive laser therapies and their implementation with light-activated nanoparticles, as well as photonic and biochemical sensors for use in the contexts of food quality and safety.

In addition to relevant scientific and technical activities, the BioPhotonics and Nanomedicine Lab is committed to promoting Key Enabling Technologies like Photonics and Industry 4.0, by providing analytical reports on the needs expressed by local industrial districts, and supporting public bodies in developing training projects for re- and up-skilling of workers. Indeed, the pressure posed by the international competition requires the establishment of network collaborations between different actors, such as companies, research institutes, associations, and other public bodies, in order to feed an ecosystem of innovation suitable for a virtuous endogenous growth.


Innovation transfer

We support Research Organizations, whether they be Public or Private, as well as Large Companies and SMEs in the development of new products from the formulation and testing of the project idea (TRL 2-3) to its prototypical implementation and validation in the appropriate environment (TRL 5-6), by providing consulting services on technical aspects, the Intellectual Property protection, and support for experimental trials and advanced certifications.

We also address issues related to fundraising, the participation to calls for funding at European, national and local level, as well as identifying partnerships with local entrepreneurs, in order to attract resources from external investors and so ensure financial continuity to update the equipment and recruit staff resources.

In the framework of regional, national and European projects, we are also involved in several activities aimed to support the process of innovation transfer to companies and to help them overcome the high barriers to market entry of new technologies.

At present, we are hosting the activities of Regional Project ORMA, which pursues the training of experts in technology transfer, and we are involved in the activities of ARTES4.0, which is the Italian Competence Center for Industry 4.0.

At European level, we are involved in the activities of H2020 CSA Project EPRISE- Empowering Photonics through Regional Innovation Strategies in Europe, European Interreg Project STEPHANIE – Space TEchnology with Photonics for market and societal challenges and H2020 IA Project PhotonHub.

We also represent the national hub within European COSME Project FoodPackLab 2, which involves clusters from four different sectors (Agriculture, Food Processing, Packaging, and Deep-Tech) and five EU countries (Belgium, Denmark, France, Italy, Spain) in supporting European SMEs to leverage on new global value chains.

Training

The BioPhotonics and Nanomedicine Lab is committed to innovative training activities focused on the dissemination of key technologies, such as nanotechnology and photonics to trainees of all levels, through national and regional education programs, such as Percorsi Per Le Competenze Trasversali e l’Orientamento – PCTO_for Italian Secondary Schools.

Recently, we have been involved in two ERASMUS+ Projects: ENEX – Expert in Nanotechnology Exploitation and INDEX – Industrial Expert, which aim to develop online short-cycle vocational qualifications at graduate level in accordance with the European Qualifications Framework focused on the rapidly growing area of industrial nanotechnology and a market-oriented course on Industry 4.0.

In this framework, we developed assessment tools designed for e-learning, course materials and a dedicated e-learning platform based on the Open edX software.

School on Artificial Intelligence in Health for people Well-Being

The school aims to lay the foundations for training and scientific debate, each time addressing issues related to the use of Artificial Intelligence to promote the health and well-being of people, with an open and wide view.

Through application examples, the school seeks to give field professionals a working method, providing a professional growth path to overcome the challenges associated with AI applications.

Issues such as Ethics in AI are central in the school, fundamental requirements in the EU context.

The School was born with an interdisciplinary character and wants to stimulate the cooperation of the various professionals operating in the sector.
